GOATGENE is a web platform that builds communities through competitive athletics — letting users spin up virtual leagues and events across sports like running, climbing, pickleball, spikeball, and golf, then gamifies the statistical tracking of their performance. Built on Next.js with a Supabase Postgres backend, it turns raw activity logs into standings, badges, and season-long competition.

Software Engineering Takeaways
Built the platform’s server-side logic end-to-end in TypeScript — Server Actions for auth, league/event/friend management, and profile onboarding, backed by row-level-security-protected Supabase tables. Wrote a deterministic seeded-PRNG match engine (mulberry32) for King-of-the-Court and Round Robin formats, so every client computes identical pairings and standings from the same event log with no server round-trip.
Software Engineering Takeaways
Designed a mode-aware scoring architecture that lets each of five-plus game modes (Simple Race, Session Rating, Basic Golf, Highest Climb, Longest Trail) define its own ranking, tiebreak, and formatting logic against a shared Metrics type — then layered an F1-style, field-scaled points engine on top (participation floor + decaying placement bonus) that locks scores at event close via a Supabase RPC with a conditional-update lock, so concurrent finalizers race safely and results stay replayable.
Project Contribution Takeaways
Kept the codebase self-documenting for a project he owns solo — dense header comments trace why each engine works the way it does (e.g. why finalization runs lazily, why ties split bonuses), and issue numbers are threaded through the code so design decisions stay traceable back to their origin.
